The issue of proud EFL teams playing Premier League academy sides has been a controversial one for some time, with the introduction of under-21 sides to the EFL Trophy a divisive move in 2016.

Attendances at those games - in an already under-attended competition - regularly hits under four figures, despite clubs like City seeing some success from seeing their academy players get valuable experience of playing against professional senior sides.
