EastEnders have paid a special tribute to June Brown's iconic Dot Cotton on the anniversary of her character's first appearance on the BBC One soap.
In a touching scene, Natalie Cassidy's Sonia Fowler and Gillian Taylforth's Kathy Beale recreated the scene as a nod to Dot, who made her first appearance on the show on July 4, 1985 – 37 years ago.
Soap legend June died on April 3 at the age 95 with her family by her side. In her first appearance, Dot could be seen going through the door of the café and saying: "Give us a tea, Lofty, and a glass of water so I can take a paracetamol." In the scene aired tonight, Sonia says to Kathy: "Give us a tea Kath, and a glass of water so I can take a paracetamol." In the long-running soap, Sonia Fowler is Dot's step-granddaughter, and the pair shared many storylines over the years – especially after Dot married Sonia's grandfather, Jim Branning, in 2002.
After her first scene, Dot would go on to become a mainstay in the soap, only being away from the show for four years between 1993 and 1997.
