Eagle-eyed viewers grew increasingly concerned for Rita Tanner’s future as she made a welcome return to the cobbles just in time for Stephen’s final rampage to take place.
In gripping scenes that unfolded on Friday 13 October’s visit to Weatherfield, viewers were on the edges of their seats as Stephen took Rita’s foster daughter Jenny Connor hostage while trying to evade the authorities who had finally rumbled his murder spree over the past year.
But during Stephen’s escape attempt, Peter Barlow ran him over with his car, killing the dastardly villain and seemingly ending the storyline.
