Jennifer Maas TV Business WriterDisney plans to increase spending on Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution (DMED) programming by more than $1 billion this quarter versus the same period last year.For the current quarter, the company plans to up its spending on direct-to-consumer programming by between $800 million and $1 billion versus the comparable fiscal 2021 quarter, CFO Christine McCarthy said during Disney’s fiscal Q1 2022 earnings call Wednesday. On the linear network side, content spend is expected to go up by approximately $500 million.“It’s all about content, content, content,” CEO Bob Chapek said on the call, which followed Disney’s announcement that Disney Plus had reached nearly 130 million subscribers by the end of 2021.

The Beths have returned with a powerful new single titled ‘A Real Thing’, marking their first new material in almost two years.It’s a darker track than fans of the band have to come to expect, standing out amid their catalogue with its bleak lyrics and bold, authoritative riffs more akin to metal than The Beths’ typically buoyant, jangly pseudo-surf-pop. On its explosive chorus, frontwoman Liz Stokes sings: “Getting rhyme over reason / It’s a sinister silly season / But maybe we can end up meaning / A real thing.”The track arrives alongside a video helmed by the band’s longtime collaborators Annabel Kean and Callum Devlin (aka Sports Team), with whom The Beths recently worked on their concert film ‘Auckland, New Zealand, 2020’.

Simone Missick, Wilson Bethel and Jessica Camacho, among others, will officially kick off in June. Missick also adds executive producer to her credits for the new season, which is already in production, alongside showrunner Dee Harris-Lawrence. In front of the camera, there are a few small cast changes.

Eddie Murphy has been perfectly comfortable sitting under mountains of prosthetics and makeup to make himself transform into the various characters seen throughout his films for decades. Perhaps that trick has been used best in his two “Coming to America” films.

Coming 2 America’s premiere on Amazon Prime has been favorable, as many friends of Eddie Murphy have made the sequel a true comedy affair. But in a recent interview with Murphy and co-star Arsenio Hall, the pair shared another wild cameo was slated for Coming 2 America.

Amazon isn’t being transparent in the weekend viewership of Coming 2 America, the Eddie Murphy comedy sequel the streamer picked up for $125 million back in October, which we first told you about. Rather they’ve serviced a statement pointing to The Digital Entertainment Group/Screen Engine/ASI’s VOD weekend rankings which contains streaming, PVOD and VOD feature titles claiming the comedy sequel was No. 1, even beating Paramount+’s first weekend stream of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. Oddly enough, Screen Engine/ASI’s chart doesn’t even rank the weekend results for Disney+’s Raya and the Last Dragon.

After dominating the film industry, particularly in comedies, for what seems like three straight decades (’80s, ’90s, ’00s), Eddie Murphy hasn’t been nearly as prolific over the past 10 years.
