While he served as a British diplomat and as a secret agent for counter-intelligence, M15, before delighting the literary world with works of art such as The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy trilogy, he also gained Irish citizenship before he passed away in December 2020.
In a new documentary on BBC4 his youngest son, Nicholas, revealed that his father was so opposed to Brexit that he embraced his Irish heritage and took citizenship to remain European.
