Ayrshire woman with muscular dystrophy has written her first novel about a vampire who uses a wheelchair.Hayleigh Barclay’s fast-paced novel ‘Girl of Ashes’ challenges ideas of what it means to be disabled and took four years to write.In her new work, Hayleigh has created a character named Elise, an 18-year-old assassin, who is blackmailed by a corrupt religious cult, in a story filled with dark humour and fast action.Hayleigh, 33, who lives in Prestwick, has spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) Type 2 and uses a wheelchair.She spent four years writing the novel as part of her Doctorate of Fine Arts from the University of Glasgow.And she based the novel on a poem she wrote for a masters' course in 2012.The Ayrshire Live app is available to.
