'Alexa, how do?': Amazon Alexa learns British regional variations for words such as angry, hello, and bread roll

Amazon’s Alexa has learnt hundreds of regional variations for British words to expand its vocabulary of local phrases and language.

From how do? to toodle pip, to alternative words for bread roll, TV wordsmith Susie Dent has been working with the tech giant to show the virtual assistant the ropes.

It comes after research by Amazon shows that over a third of people (34 percent) say they struggle to understand British dialects with 52 percent admitting they just ‘nod along’ when they don't understand.Language expert Susie Dent said: “Nowhere is the diversity of English vocabulary more apparent than in Britain.“Our local languages are constantly evolving and changing.
