Former Arsenal and England midfielder Paul Merson has hinted that the Gunners could soon find themselves in the same position as Manchester United in regards to academy products becoming the face of the first-team squad.

Merson made the admission after a much-changed Arsenal side cruised into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening with a comfortable 5-1 win over Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium.

A hat-trick from Eddie Nketiah did the bulk of the damage whilst Nicolas Pepe and debutant Charlie Patino also helped themselves to a goal each.

Patino stepped off the bench with ten minutes of the contest remaining, replacing Emile Smith Rowe, and converted Pepe's low cross to net Arsenal's fifth of the night in stoppage time.
