Every year Muslims around the globe observe the holy month of Ramadan. This ninth month in the Islamic calendar involves fasting from sunrise to sunset, which this year began on Saturday 2 April. The end of the fasting month is hailed by the sight of the new moon meaning that often it is hard to accurately predict the exact date of Eid al-Fitr in advance. The Islamic calendar is based on the Lunar calendar so a new month is begun by the sighting of the new moon. This year there are predictions that Eid will fall on Monday 2 May, which is also a bank holiday in the UK this year.

The month and fasting began with the first sight of the crescent moon and will begin when the next one appears. The night before, known as ‘Chaand Raat’ - or night of the moon - consists of festivities to welcome in the new month’s moon.

Eid al-Fitr’s name comes from an Arabic term which translates as the ‘feast of breaking the fast’. Muslims around the world will be wishing each other ‘Eid Mubarak’ to commemorate the festival which translates into ‘Happy Eid’.Though, this can also be translated literally as ‘Mubarak’ meaning ‘blessed’ and ‘Eid’ meaning ‘feast’, ‘festival’ or ‘celebration’.Thus, celebrators can wish each other a blessed feast, festival or celebration.
