When is Eid al-Fitr 2022? How end of Ramadan is calculated by new moon sighting
Every year Muslims around the globe observe the holy month of Ramadan. This ninth month in the Islamic calendar involves fasting from sunrise to sunset, which this year began on Saturday 2 April. The end of the fasting month is hailed by the sight of the new moon meaning that often it is hard to accurately predict the exact date of Eid al-Fitr in advance. The Islamic calendar is based on the Lunar calendar so a new month is begun by the sighting of the new moon. This year there are predictions that Eid will fall on Monday 2 May, which is also a bank holiday in the UK this year. The month and fasting began with the first sight of the crescent moon and will begin when the next one appears. The night before, known as ‘Chaand Raat’ - or night of the moon - consists of festivities to welcome in the new month’s moon.
