Reeling in the Years brings us on a trip down memory lane each week but some weeks are more difficult to watch than others. This Sunday we took a look back at the year 2012 when Ireland began recovering from the economic crisis and a beautiful woman was unfairly taken from the world.

Dr. Savita Halappanavar died in 2012 at the age of 31 after she presented in hospital suffering a miscarriage at 17-weeks and asked for a termination which was refused because there was a foetal heartbeat.

She later deteriorated into septic shock, multiple organ failure and died of cardiac arrest. Savita’s death shocked the nation and it led to huge outrage, and later the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act 2013 was passed in her honour.
