Vast new ‘NHS Nightingale’ coronavirus hospital to be set up in London convention centre

A huge temporary hospital is to be set up in London’s ExCel convention centre to care for thousands of coronavirus patients, the health secretary has revealed.

The NHS Nightingale hospital will open next week and will be capable of treating 4,000 patients at a time as the government continues to ramp up its efforts to tackle the pandemic.

In this afternoon’s Downing Street press conference on the virus, health secretary Matt Hancock also confirmed that 7.5m items of public protection equipment - especially masks - have now been shipped to support health and social care workers, as tens of thousands of retired staff and final-year students join the frontline effort.
