The number of people who have died in the UK after contracting coronavirus has risen to 28,734. The death toll is up by 288 from 28,446 at the same point yesterday, according to the latest update from the Department of Health.
It is the lowest number of coronavirus deaths since March 29. However Health Secretary Matt Hancock said “reported figures tend to be lower over the weekend so we do expect that number to rise”.
A total of 85,186 tests were carried out yesterday. On Friday last week, the government announced it had succeeded in reaching a target of 100,000 tests per day by the end of April.
