Some Today with Claire Byrne listeners were disgusted by Friday’s show as it aired a report on hare coursing which included the claim that, ‘Coursing clubs are the hares greatest ally’.
The claims were made by Kerryman James O’Connor who is involved in the practice and also stated, ‘Our lives revolve around coursing… The breeding [of hares] is part of the family culture’.
He went onto say, ‘Hares are revered by the coursing clubs. Over 99 per cent of hares captured are returned to the wild, after every meeting into club reserves.
They’re going back in better shape than they came in.’ Aideen Yourell of the Irish Council Against Bloodsports countered his claims saying that taking them from the wild to use live bait ‘hardly good for them’.
