Eamonn Holmes has opened up on his struggle with shingles for Shingles Awareness month. He wrote, "Having had shingles, I know how painful and exhausting it can be" alongside a photo of himself with a swollen face.The TV presenter previously contracted the disease three years ago, and he said of the initial discovery of the symptoms - "I remember going to the bathroom mirror and jumping back in horror".
What is shingles? Shingles is a painful rash caused by the same virus as Chickenpox, with around 1 in 5 people suffering from it at some point.
Anybody who has had chickenpox can get shingles as the virus can lay dormant for years before reactivating. Anybody can get shingles, but it's most common in those over 50.
You can’t ‘catch’ shingles from someone who has shingles. The infection can last up to four weeks. The dangers of shingles In some of the more extreme cases or when the condition isn't treated, worrying side effects can occur, including: Blindness: If the virus infects the eye it can cause pain, redness, swelling, sensitivity to light, and blurry vision.
