‘The French Dispatch’ Scores Highest Theater Average of Pandemic Era

Opening in 14 cities, “The French Dispatch” is estimated to earn $1.3 million this weekend for an average of around $25,000 per venue.

By comparison, the per-theater average for “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” which set a post-shutdown opening record of $90 million in wide release, had an average of $21,300.

The Angelika Theatre in New York was the strongest performing theater, reporting multiple sellout screenings.Serving as Anderson’s tribute to The New Yorker, “The French Dispatch” is an anthology film telling a series of short stories based on the articles of the fictional French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun, which is shutting down following the death of its editor-in-chief, Arthur Howitzer Jr. (Bill Murray).
