Seventeen fines for flouting social distancing laws were handed out across Lanarkshire’s police division in the first week of the new Covid-19 legislation.A total of 144 fixed penalty notices were issued across Scotland between last Friday, March 27 and Wednesday, April 1, with Police Scotland thanking the public for “their overwhelming support and co-operation”.Officers can issue the £60 fines – reduced to £30 if paid within 28 days – for offences under the new act which enforces social distancing and “stay at home” guidance among the public, and allows for the closure of any gatherings, event and premises.Lanarkshire’s total was the fourth-highest of Scotland’s 13 police divisions – behind Greater Glasgow with 46, the North East with 20
