Simon Thomas has given an emotional update to fans on social media as he revealed his newborn daughter won’t be coming for over a month, following her arrival 8 weeks early.

The presenter, 49, first took to Instagram on Wednesday to confirm that his wife Derrina, 31, had fallen “rapidly ill” from preeclampsia and delivered a baby girl 8 weeks before her due date.

He later discussed the experience on the Jeremy Vine show, as he explained how Derrina had been so unwell she had needed to have an emergency c-section, with his newborn daughter weighing just 3.4lbs when she was born.

He said: “We weren't due till the end of November and then Derrina was feeling quite poorly over the weekend. On Monday night we thought we ought to go into hospital, and she got diagnosed in the morning with preeclampsia, which anyone watching who knows about this, can be really dangerous. “So suddenly on Tuesday afternoon, having thought we had eight weeks to get ready, buy all the stuff and generally get ready for a new baby, she had an emergency c-section, so we've got a very tiny 3.4lb baby." He reflected: “There was such a range of emotions, from fear on Tuesday, obviously hugely worried that Derrina was going to be okay and that the baby was going to be okay…to suddenly having new life in your hands.” The journey for the growing family is also far from over, as Simon later revealed on social media that there is a “long road ahead” as the new addition will need to remain in the hospital’s special care baby unit for the next few weeks.
