Tartan trews. Pink polo shirts. Stuffy rules and regulations and a reluctance to let women join in. These are just a few of the reasons that so many people don’t think golf is for them.

And despite a few lessons 19 years ago, I was very much one of them. Now Glasgow’s newest place to hit tiny balls aims to turn the sport’s uptight reputation on its head.

Golf It! is owned by the Royal & Ancient in St Andrews, the world’s most famous golfing institution. But you won’t find a club official sucking his teeth and asking why you are wearing the wrong shoes here.

The site, beside Hogganfield Loch, looks more like a cool open air market or a holiday resort than a golf club. There are trucks selling coffee and pizza.
