On paper, the new Netflix film from Ryan Murphy should tick all the boxes for a musical theatre and film lover. The Prom has an all star cast, a stellar soundtrack and is helmed by the man who created the likes of American Horror Story and Glee.

Alas, this film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical hits a bit of a bum note. The Prom follows Dee Dee Allen (Meryl Streep), and Barry Glickman (James Corden) whose new Broadway show is a flop and their careers are flatlining.

To help get them some good PR, they decide to travel to a small town in Indiana and try help high school student Emma (Jo Ellen Pellman) attend her Prom with her girlfriend Alyssa (Ariana DeBose).
