Rail firms causing chaos for Scots over the holiday weekend will take a share of £25million compensation for delayed works – but not pass it on to passengers.
West coast main line operator Avanti West Coast, whose route from Glasgow was hit, will be paid millions. Network Rail will make the payments to cover lost ticket sales as its engineering schemes were to blame.A total of £25million compensation is likely to be paid for Easter disruption across all Britain’s rail operators. But rail firms will use a loophole to get out of paying the usual Delay Repay compensation to passengers.Firms will say the delays were advertised in advance, meaning they are not covered by the usual rules.Bruce Williamson, a spokesman for passenger campaign group Railfuture, said: “Passengers whose journeys are lengthened by engineering works would naturally think that some of the money should go to them.”Avanti West Coast said: “Delay Repay is calculated against the planned timetable, which is published in advance.”A Network Rail spokesman added: “With train operators predominantly run under direct Government contracts, the compensation goes to the taxpayer.” Don't miss the latest news from around Scotland and beyond - Sign up to our daily newsletter here.
