Penny Knatchbull was one of Prince Philip's closest confidents, and now the pair's friendship is set to be explored in the fifth series of Netflix hit series The Crown. The show will however portray the Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away in April 2021, pursuing an affair with friend Penny, 69.
Royal experts and those close to the Royal Family have spoken out against the decision to show these scenes with former press secretary to the Queen, Dickie Arbiter, branding it "cruel rubbish.” Penny and Philip's closeness had sparked rumours of an affair over the course of their friendship, but the claims were always strenuously denied and were proven to be unfounded.
Penny, also known as Lady Romsey and Lady Brabourne, sparked up a friendship with the Duke at a polo match when she was just 20 years old.
Despite the pair's 32 year age gap, they hit off and bonded over their love for the equestrian sport of carriage-driving. Philip taught Penny, who was in a relationship with Lord Romsey, Earl Mountbatten's grandson Norton Knatchbull at the time, carriage driving in 1994 and she went on to become his driving partner.
