Danny Mills believes Manchester United not allowing Jesse Lingard to leave this month would be "poor business". The 29-year-old is out of contract at Old Trafford in the summer and has struggled to find his way in the first-team since enjoying a productive loan spell with West Ham last season.

The Manchester Evening News reported earlier this week that Newcastle were working on a loan move for the attacker to bring him to St James' Park until the end of the season.

Allowing Lingard to leave would give him the game-time he craves, as well as get United a fee of some sort — be it a loan fee or permanent transfer sum, ahead of his contract expiry in June, when he could leave Old Trafford for nothing. “I don’t get Man United at all,” Mills says, analysing the Lingard situation for Football Insider. “Why would you not let him go?

If you’re not going to use him, you might as well let him go in January. “I think this will go down to the last day of the transfer window.
