For the latest news from in and around Wigan sign up to the MyWigan newsletter here Police have cracked down on one area of Wigan following a spate of burglaries targeting vulnerable elderly people - which has seen windows smashed and jewellery stolen.

Officers launched an operation in the borough after a series incidents in the west of the borough over several months, particularly targeting Aspull, Standish and Shevington.

Operation Stara was launched in response to 'a rise in burglaries on empty homes or those occupied by elderly victims during the late afternoon or early evening hours from November 2020 to January 2021', according to police.
