Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón defended his decision to issue directives ordering prosecutors not to pursue legally prescribed enhanced sentences in a variety of cases.

After the Association of Deputy District Attorneys for Los Angeles County (ADDA) sued Gascón, claiming that the blanket policies violate state law, Gascón claimed that harsher sentences only cause more problems. "People must be held accountable, but we often put ppl in prison for extra years, increasing recidivism & creating more victims," Gascón tweeted Wednesday evening. "This is unsafe, unjust & wastes taxpayer $.
