King Charles and Camilla leave Balmoral to travel back to London after Queen’s death

The King and Queen Consort Camilla have left Balmoral en route to Aberdeen airport where they will fly back to London. King Charles was pictured in the back of a car, with Queen Consort Camilla in the front passenger seat, as they were driven in convoy over the River Dee towards Ballater.

Charles sat in the back, dressed in his mourning clothes of a black suit and tie, looking sombre. Camilla stared straight ahead as they were driven from the Scottish residence, where they had rushed to be at the Queen’s bedside.The couple stayed overnight at Balmoral, where Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully aged 96 on Thursday afternoon.

Charles will meet the prime minister later once back in London and will make a televised speech. Yesterday, Charles shared a sombre statement following the announcement of Queen Elizabeth II's death.

Sharing his grief across social media, under the official handle Clarence House, Charles wrote: "The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. "We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. "I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.” "During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held." Charles and Camilla's departure to London comes hours after Prince Harry left the Scottish royal estate to return to the capital.
