Joe Kinnear dies at 77 after battle with dementia, family confirm

Former Newcastle United manager has died at the age of 77, his family has announced. His loved ones confirmed that the Ireland international passed away on Sunday, following a battle with dementia.They released a statement, which read: "We are sad to announce that Joe passed away peacefully this afternoon surrounded by his family." Kinnear won four trophies during an 11-year spell as a Tottenham Hotspur player between 1966 and 1975 after joining as a teenage amateur in 1963.

While at Spurs, he made over 250 appearances, winning the FA Cup, the UEFA Cup, and twice lifting the League Cup, The Mirror reports.

The defender made 16 appearances for Brighton and Hove Albion before retiring aged 30 in 1976. During his playing career, he gained 26 caps for Ireland.

Kinnear began his coaching career in Asia, working in the UAE alongside Scotland international Dave Mackay. He then coached in Malaysia, before spells with the India and Nepal national teams.
