Inflation 'out of control' as cost of everyday food items soars by up to 65%

Rishi Sunak has been challenged to get a grip on "out of control" inflation after the cost of everyday food essentials soared by up to 65 per cent over the last year.

The new Prime Minister, who will be officially appointed by the King today, faces a mounting pile of economic issues to deal with as he enters 10 Downing Street.

Official figures from the ONS show the cost of pasta has risen by 60 per cent in the year up to September, while the price of tea has risen by almost 50 per cent.

Cooking oil is up by 65 per cent, bread by 38 per cent and chips 39 per cent.Inflation is now at a 40-year high with many Scots struggling to make ends meet.Alison Thewliss, SNP Treasury spokeswoman, said: "The Tories have been a disaster for the economy.
