The energy price cap, which acts as a backstop to limit the amount that households have to pay for default tariffs, now sits at £1,277, however, Cornwall Insights, an energy sector specialist, warns bills could rise to an eye-watering £1,865 a year, putting even further pressure on household finances.

However, curtain pole manufacturer, Rothley, teamed up with Dr Justin Searle, lead of the Building Energy Systems research centre at Swansea University, to find out what householders can do to keep their heating bills manageable and bring their electricity bills down quickly.

And, as a rule, appliances that heat up, like washing machines, kettles and toasters, consume far more electricity than devices that produce light or sound. “So, if you want to take the heat off your gas or electricity bills, focus on reducing the energy needed for heat.”Dr Searle shares five things to check around your home to ensure it is energy efficient.Ideally there should be insulation between the rafters and a layer over the rafters - approximately 250mm in total.
