How often you should really clean your bed as sleep expert reveals you shouldn't make it in the morning

We all know we need to change our bed sheets on a regular basis, but what about when it comes to cleaning the actual mattress?

Beds can be a breeding ground for unsightly germs and bacteria and it's not often that people will remember to strip them down at all.

And with one in 20 of us washing our sheets only every four weeks, and with more than a third waiting 14 days, it's time we get down to the dirty details.

According to one sleep expert, as well as regularly swapping our sheets, the mattress needs to be properly cleaned at least every six months and totally ditched after eight years, and you shouldn't make your bed first thing in the morning because it encourages bed bugs.
