Horsefly season has arrived as the nation contends with a week-long heatwave this summer. Scotland not only has to tackle blood-sucking midges, but also pesky flies that feast on animals, including humans.
The hot and humid weather is a perfect breeding ground for enormous horseflies, with people complaining that they've been bitten by the insects over recent days.
The 'vampire' horseflies - or clegs - usually swarm after hot weather and bring with them the threat of serious infection. Females feed off blood, and bites often result in painful swellings and the possibility of infections which might not be treatable with existing antibiotics.
