Holly Willoughby's return to This Morning was "highly strategised" following the scandal surrounding her former co-presenter Phillip Schofield and his affair with a much younger colleague.

After Phillip, 61, stepped down from the show and later resigned from ITV itself, it was announced that Holly, 42, would be taking an extended half-term break.

On her return to the morning show, Holly was joined on-screen by Josie Gibson and did not shy away from addressing the Phillip situation.

In what has now been referred to as a "highly strategised" move, she addressed viewers, saying: "It feels very strange sitting here without Phil and I imagine you might be feeling a lot like I have - shaken, troubled, let down, worried for the wellbeing of people on all sides of what's been going on, and full of questions. "You, me and all of us at This Morning gave our love and support to someone who was not telling the truth, who acted in a way that they themselves felt that they had to resign from ITV and step down from a career that they loved. That is a lot to process." She went on to discuss the toll that recent events have had on the mental health of those involved, before adding that the This Morning "family" will continue to "work hard" on the show.
