Drivers could face a fee of up to £500 and receive penalty points if they ignore child safety warnings, according to the updated Highway Code.
The fixed penalty for a driver or passenger failing to wear a seat belt is a £100 fine, although if the case is taken to court, fines could increase to £500.
Motorists could also face civil proceedings for damages, if, for example, they failed to safely carry someone else's child. As well as the legal penalties, failure to wear a seat belt or ensure that a child passenger uses an appropriate child car seat or wears a seat belt could affect any claims against motor insurance cover.
