Residents are being allowed to return to their homes in Dennistoun several hours after a huge police response to a suspicious package.

The cordon around Alexandra Parade is being drawn back after the drama that erupted around the street in the east end of Glasgow at 3.30pm.

Police, fire services and a Royal Navy bomb squad descended on Milnbank Street after a suspicious package was reportedly discovered at a building in the area.

Alexandra Parade was cordoned off between Milnbank Street and Armadale Street with houses and businesses evacuated for hours while ordnance disposal experts assessed the contents of the package. The M8 was closed for around three hours between junctions 12 and 15 because of the buildings' proximity to the motorway, adding to motorists' rush hour woes. Some residents had been escorted back to their homes earlier in the evening. However, the Record understands this measure has been stood down as the incident was wound down.
