slave trade. A petition, launched nine months ago, has gained fresh traction with almost 8,000 signatures this week in response to the anti-racism movement sweeping the globe.
It is advocating for the change of Glassford Street, Buchanan Street and Ingram street among others named after Tobacco Lords who owned plantations in America and Jamaica.
These wealthy merchants could own up to 300 slaves transported from Africa.Jamaica, Tobago and Antigua streets in Glasgow are also named after the locations of their estates.The petition calls for a change in street names to take the slave owners "off the pedestal they seemingly stand on and instead recognise other Scottish activists who are deserving of such esteem".It also mentions how the city.
