Jim Hartz has sadly died. The reporter, who notably co-hosted the Today show alongside Barbara Walters in the ’70s, passed away on April 17 at the age of 72 in Fairfax County, Virginia, his wife Alexandra confirmed via Deadline. At the time he joined Today, he was 34, covering major events like President Richard M. Nixon’s resignation and the end of the Vietnam War.
He started as a reporter for KOTV in Tulsa and hosted Sun Up, the channel’s morning show, later being approached by NBC in New York.
He became anchor of the evening newscasts on WNBC, and by 1974, boarded Today. In 1976, he became a news anchor at WRC, the NBC affiliate in Washington, later co-hosting PBS’s Over Easy celebrity talk show and weekly science show Innovation, as well as Asia Now.
