Former RTÉ commercial director Willie O’Reilly has defended the pay of the broadcaster’s top earners – saying what the presenters bring to the lives of their audience ‘has to be categorised as well’.

On Wednesday, it was revealed RTÉ’s top ten highest-paid hosts took home a combined €9.5million between 2017 and 2019. Late Late Show and radio host Ryan Tubridy held the number one spot each of those years, taking home €495,000 in 2019.

In 2019 alone, RTÉ’s top-ten highest earners, which also included Ray D’Arcy, Liveline’s Joe Duffy and the late Marian Finucane, took home more than €3.2million between them despite the broadcaster experiencing significant financial issues in recent years.
