Official figures have now shown the scale of the rise in unemployment in Motherwell and Wishaw due to coronavirus.The figures, released by the Department of Work and Pensions, show in May that there were 9,240 Universal Credit claimants in both towns – a rise of over 14 per cent on the previous month.In the neighbouring Airdrie and Shotts UK parliamentary constituency, the figure was even higher with a 16.9 per cent rise in Universal Credit claims.A Jobcentre spokesperson said: “We are experiencing unprecedented times.“We are supporting people back into work by keeping in touch, digitally and by telephone to reassure them everything was fine with their Universal Credit claim.“Despite the disruption caused by the coronavirus outbreak, there.
