Derry Girls, but not the one who got me to watch it. For months, she said that there was this show on about young Catholic girls “coming of age during The Troubles,” a period of bloody civil unrest in Northern Ireland during the ‘90s.
It’s not that I don’t trust my mom’s taste—I do!—but the way she described it made it seem religious and cultural and adolescent and possibly a bit heartfelt, and I just didn’t have the patience.
I didn’t want to watch anyone cry in a confessional about losing their virginity. Then a friend finally explained the important thing about the show: it’s a half-hour comedy.
I finally gave it a chance and can, with the full force of years of watching and writing about TV behind me, say to you all: Derry Girls is a perfect show. : why they always gotta be right?The series, written by Lisa McGee and inspired by her upbringing, premiered on Channel 4 in the UK in 2018 and was a weekly hit, especially in Northern Ireland, where it’s set.
