Crumbling Cromwell fortress folly undergoes repairs

The historic structure is perched on top of Oliver Cromwell’s citadel in the town, which was built to control Scots. Safety checks have revealed the little tower - known as Miller's Folly - needs work.

It is now fenced off and South Ayrshire Council is carrying out repairs. A South Ayrshire Council spokesman said: “A safety inspection of the turret, has led to the repair of some of the mortar and stonework as a precaution. “The work is scheduled to be completed by the middle of July and the fencing will be removed at that point.” The Cromwellian army built five citadels in Scotland.

Ayr's, erected in 1653, was the largest. It was surrounded by a moat filled with freshwater. Miller's Folly was added on in 1850 - the lower part is.
