The traffic cone which sits atop the iconic Duke of Wellington statue in Glasgow city centre has been painted in Ukrainian colours to show support for the warn torn country.
A video posted on Twitter tonight, shows Glasgow man Garry McWhirter climbing up a set of ladders to swap the Duke's famous orange hat for one almost identical to the Ukrainian flag.
The bright coloured cone also features a bunch of sunflowers which have been placed at the top. Throughout Ukraine's history, the flower has been used as a symbol of peace.
Revellers in Royal Exchange Square spotted Garry changing the cone and can be heard cheering as he proudly placed the new hat on top of the statue. This isn't the first time the Duke's cone has been swapped. In January 2020 it was changed to a blue one with yellow stars to mark Britain officially leaving the European Union. The statue of the former prime minister has for years been targeted by students and revellers who put an orange traffic cone on his head, and it has become part of the city's landscape.Plans in 2013 to raise the statue to stop cones being placed on its head were withdrawn after a public outcry.
