At their annual meeting on Sunday Rochdale Labour group voted to replace Coun Brett, despite the party consolidating its huge majority by holding all 15 seats it was defending in Thursday's local election.
He has been succeeded by West Middleton councillor Neil Emmott. On Sunday Rochdale Labour Group tweeted: "Today @LabourRochdale has voted to for a leadership change. "A full statement will be released.
