Car dealership Lookers set to axe 1500 jobs in bid to cut costs by £50m

Around 1,500 jobs are set to be axed by struggling car dealership Lookers. The company announced plans to close another 12 showrooms in a bid to save cash in the face of the coronavirus crisis.

The firm said it was launching redundancy consultations across all areas of the group. Around 1,500 jobs are expected to go among its 8,100 -strong workforce.Lookers closed 15 dealerships last year and plan to shut a further 12 in the coming months as they hope to cut costs by £50m a year.

The dealership, who has sites in Edinburgh, Stirling and Glasgow, have been hit hard by plunging sales during the lockdown after already struggling in a difficult car market.
