The owners of Altrincham Market have had their business rates increased during lockdown by almost 500 per cent to more than £180,000 per year.

Nick Johnson and his wife Jenny Thompson run the food hall and market based in Trafford, alongside Mackie Mayor in central Manchester and The Picturedome in Macclesfield.

The couple were shocked to see their new business rate has also been backdated to the day the UK went into lockdown. On Monday March 23, the business owners were forced to close Altrincham Market due to the government restrictions and are furious about their new bill at a time when they have no money coming in.
