It was a throwaway comment that allowed Alex Rae to pick up his dream of starring for Rangers.Twenty years on, the Ibrox coach is still counting his blessings for all the opportunities that have followed from that chance remark.
It was back in the early part of 2004 when the then-Wolves midfielder sat down for an interview with the late BBC reporter Tony Gubba.As they wrapped up, Rae let slip his love of all things Rangers.
Within 24 hours that message had been passed on to Alex McLeish, sparking a chain of events that would soon see him return to Ibrox to fulfil an ambition he thought had died when his first Gers stint as a teenage prospect ended in rejection from Graeme Souness.
It led to Rae playing his part in the most famous of all Gers’ 55 league titles on Helicopter Sunday. And in a roundabout way, that brief chat with Gubba is still opening doors two decades on.
