Ian Murray hopes his Diamonds can become record breakers as they head into the final two games of the League One campaign.The Airdrie boss watched his side battle out a 3-2 win over Dumbarton with 10-men at the weekend to go 18 games unbeaten.And that saw them close in on the 19-game club record achieved by the title-winning team of 2003/04 when Sandy Stewart led the club to Second Division glory.
The 19th game in that sequence came in the first game of the 2004/05 season.This time around it looks like the incredible streak won’t be enough to deliver a trophy, with League One leaders Cove Rangers five points clear at the summit with two games to go.But Murray has challenged his side to make a bit of history regardless of the league outcome, with a win or draw at Clyde on Saturday and a positive result at home to Peterhead a week later seeing them break the record with a 20th game undefeated.“The players will keep going and we hopefully go to 20 and get that record now,” said Murray.“That’s us 18 games undefeated with 13 wins in there and I don’t think there’s a game in there where we haven’t deserved it.“The players deserve a lot of credit."Saturday keeps us bubbling along nicely and gets us closer to that 70 point mark, which is normally enough to win the title but not this season, and it gets us ready for the really crunch games in the play-offs.“If we are in the play-offs, it is what it is.
