"Wythenshawe is the largest town in Europe without a railway station, despite the fact a rail line runs right through the area."Those were the words spoken by Eugene Ring, a campaigner who dedicated years of his life fighting for a railway station in his community.

For 56 years Wythenshawe has been without a functioning train station, despite being home to a population of over 100,000 people.

Railway stations at both Baguley and Northenden were closed in 1964 and later demolished. Baguley train station was formally located near the southern end of Brooklands Road, where Shady Lane crossed the railway. The station was first opened on 1 February 1866 and was served by two local passenger trains from Stockport to Warrington.
