An uninsured provisional driver who risked getting behind the wheel unsupervised has been arrested in Ashton. Things got worse for the driver, whose vehicle had already been seized for the previous offences, failed a roadside drugs test for cannabis and was later detained.

Greater Manchester Police officers made a routine stop on a vehicle but even they would have been surprised with the outcome of their search.

The driver proved to only have a provisional licence and was driving without supervision. The sanctions meant officers could seize the vehicle but the driver was also without insurance before they then tested positive for cannabis, leading to their arrest.

According to road safety charity Brake, drug-driving is a factor in more than one in 20 fatal crashes in the UK. Under the influence of cannabis, the risk of a fatal or serious injury crash is two times more likely and increases to 16x when combined with alcohol.
