Ayr United star, who became Alex Ferguson’s first signing for St Mirren, has died at the age of 67.Bert Ferguson was also a champion golfer and a regular in the Ayrshire county team for many years.Bert followed in the footsteps of his elder brother Jackie when Ally MacLeod signed him for Ayr from Maybole Juniors.The winger almost capped a dream debut with a goal at home to Celtic in November 1973.Ally Hunter denied him with a fantastic save before Kenny Dalglish grabbed the winner in front of a Somerset Park crowd of 14,428.Fergie, who was one of Bert’s team-mates, was so impressed that when St Mirren appointed him as manager in October 1974, he returned to Ayr to make him his first signing.After leaving Saints, Bert played for Stranraer.
