There was a 120% increase in calls to the National Domestic Abuse hotline over a 24 hour period sine the coronavirus lockdown came into force.
Speaking during this evening's press conference, the Home Secretary said the government will be launching a public awareness campaign to ensure domestic abuse victims know there is help on offer.
Priti Patel also revealed there are plans in place to provide charities and the Domestic Abuse Commissioner with an additional £2 million to bolster domestic abuse helplines.
The cash is aimed at ensuring there is enough victim support available after charities reported a surge in activity since the social distancing guidelines were introduced three weeks ago.
